Flowcrete UK has taken part in a large-scale, sustainable flooring refurbishment at the Royal Mail’s Atherstone depot.

This project involved creating a new floor finish that would not only meet difficult operational criteria but which would do so with environmentally friendly best practise technology and techniques at its core.

To achieve this, 10,000 mof failing bitumen flooring was taken up and 286 tonnes of it was recycled to ensure that as little waste was generated as possible. The old floor was then replaced with 10,000 m2 of the flowable industrial screed, Flowscreed Industrial Top, which was installed at a thickness of 10 mm.

A fast drying, pump applied, cement based floor topping, Flowscreed Industrial Top would be able to provide a robust screed layer that would maintain its properties for an extended period of time despite the multiple challenges within the busy depot.

Flowscreed Industrial Top complemented the project’s green credentials, as it is manufactured in a plant that has attained the ISO 14001:2015 environmental management system certification. The screed was also sourced locally to the project, minimising the environmental impact incurred by transporting large quantities of material.

The new floor would have to maintain a fully functional surface in the face of many potentially damaging factors, including heavy foot traffic, the movement of wheeled equipment, point loading from heavily laden racks and pallets as well as the inevitable scuffs, scrapes and impacts inherent to the long working hours of a large-scale Royal Mail facility.

The floor proved to be a resounding success and was Highly Commended in the Large Industrial Project of the Year category at the 2017 FeRFA Awards ceremony.
